We are so incredibly excited to announce that we have relaunched our Mandarin lessons at Abercerdin!
We are honoured to again be working with the Confucius Institute at Cardiff University. Confucius Institute facilitate 'The Wales China School Project' which promotes Chinese language and culture across schools in Wales.
As part of our relaunch, we held a China Day at Abercerdin on Monday 4th November. We were visited by Xiaoke Chen (our Mandarin Tutor), Ke Zhou and Yangyang Cheng who carried out lots of fun Chinese cultural activities including paper cutting, calligraphy and Chinese Kung Fu!
The children will now be having Mandarin lessons weekly for one hour from Years One to Six.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
The weather outside is frightful but the children at Abercerdin love it when it snows! We've been really lucky to have a couple of days where the snow has poured down from the sky and turned our beautiful surroundings into a winter wonderland.
The big question: Will it stick?

Remembrance Poppy Display!
This year for Remembrance Day we have decided to change the way we display our respect and thanks to our fallen heroes.
We have purchased 50 giant poppies from the British Legion’s Poppy Shop.
We would love it if you could support us and we are hoping parents/community will purchase a poppy for £5 (all monies will go back to the British Legion, they are hoping to raise 50 million this year).
The picture is an example of what we would like you to do with your Poppy.
‘We will remember them’ written on the top. Then the full name of your loved one that has been in any of the services for our country. Underneath in bullet point list:
*When they were born- only need a year if you do not know the precise date.
*Educated- what school.
*Lived- location of family.
*Died- here we can just put location
*At rest at- cemetery.
If you do not have a family member you can choose somebody who is in active service or an historical figure such as a political leader.
Please pop to the school office with £5 donation to receive your poppy.
We would be grateful if you could bring them back after half term- first Monday back for the display.
Pumpkin Painting

The Nurturing programme is like a jigsaw puzzle. All the topics are individual pieces, but when start putting them together then the puzzle starts to make sense. Working your way through it a piece at a time, completing activities along the way.
- Cygnet is designed for parents and carers of children and young people aged 5-18 years with an autism spectrum condition (ASC). It is delivered over six 2.5-3 hour sessions which cover a number of topics: Autism and diagnosis; Communication; Sensory Issues; Understanding behaviour; Managing behaviour; and Choice of topic decided by parents/carers.

However, both of our newly formed teams played extremely well and represented our school admirably. Well done all!

Community Hwb
The PTA’s Community Hwb opened its doors for the first time in March. The Hwb contains a community shop, food pantry and meeting space.
The community shop is open three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 1pm), offering a wide variety of clothes, shoes, trinkets, books and other items for sale. Second hand school uniforms are also available for both primary and secondary school pupils.
The food pantry has been a great success and the school and PTA have made links with John and Alison from Baobab Bach, a local CIC, to work together to tackle food poverty. The food pantry is open weekly on Fridays from 9am to 1pm. The food pantry offers a wide variety of both tinned, fresh and frozen food alongside personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies. Anyone is welcome to visit and fill a hessian bag for £5.
The Hwb has welcomed many visitors including the Local Community Coordinator, the local Warden and Early Help. Plans are currently underway to host training and courses for families and the local community including Cygnet and the Nuture programmes in the Hwb.
Please pop in! The kettle is always on!

Forces!
Year 6 have been exploring how forces affect the movement of objects in their inquiry work this month. They have gained a conceptual and scientific understanding of the effects of gravity, friction, air resistance, and buoyancy. In preparation for their end of inquiry experiment, the pupils used Newton meters to measure the mass of classroom objects as well as the force of weight.

The children have enjoyed creating their own snazzy outfits in our dressing up corner. It has been lovely to see the children explore and experiment with a variety of textures, colours and styles.
