How we teach Read Write Inc. Phonics and Get Writing at Abercerdin Primary School

At Abercerdin Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme to give every child the best possible start in learning to read, write and spell with confidence. Our approach is structured, consistent, and highly supportive, ensuring all pupils make strong progress at their own pace.

Read Write Inc. Phonics

Purpose: To teach children the phonic knowledge and reading skills they need to decode words, read fluently and develop a love of reading.

How we teach it:

  • Children are assessed regularly and grouped according to their phonic stage, allowing teaching to be precide and targeted.
  • Daily RWI sessions are taught by trained staff, focusing on:
    • Speed Sounds (learning and revising sounds)
    • Blending (putting sounds together to read words)
    • Reading storybooks matched to the children's phonic level
    • Spelling and handwriting linked directly to the sounds taught
  • Lessons follow a fast-paced, structured routine to keep children engaged and successful.
  • Additional support is provided for children who need extra practice to ensure they keep up.

What this looks like for pupils:

Children quickly learn to recognise sounds, read words confidently and enjoy reading books that they can access independently.

Get Writing

Once children have secured early reading skills through RWI Phonics, they move into the Get Writing programme, which builds strong writing skills.

Purpose: To develop children's confidence, stamina and creativity in writing through carefully planned activities linked to the texts they have read.

How we teach it:

  • Each writing unit begins with strong models of language drawn from the RWI storybooks.
  • Children learn to:
    • Build ambitious vocabulary
    • Understand sentence structure
    • Organised their ideas clearly
    • Edit and improve their work independently
  • Lessons include shared writing, guided practice, and opportunities for children to apply their skills in independent compositions.
  • Grammar, punctuation and handwriting are taught explicitly and revisited frequently.

What this looks like for pupils:

Children become confident, enthusiastic writers who can express their ideas clearly and with increasing sophistication.
