Working with visitors.
Kate Denbyshire, is an amazing mosaic artist who works with community groups on specific arts projects throughout South Wales. The majority of her work involves children in schools. Kate loves to work with a lot of different materials including ceramics, mosaic, glass, willow, wire, paper and paint.
Throughout the past seven days (5th - 13th May 2014), Kate has worked with Abercerdin pupils (Year 2 - 6) to create a fantastic mosaic for the school foyer.
The school has eight very special pupil awards which are given to deserved pupils at the end of their Abercerdin journey, in Year Six. The awards are: 'The Margaret Bonner Award for Boys/Girls', 'The Dale Hart Citizenship Award for Boys/Girls', 'Most Improved Pupil', 'Best Academic Improvement in Maths/English', and 'Winning House'. The current plaques are scratched and broken, we needed to rethink the awards. The School Council decided that we needed to celebrate the pupils' achievement in a more inspiring style. We decided to turn the entire foyer wall into a massive award mosaic, where children's names would be engraved, with room for names over the next twenty plus years.
On the first day everybody met Kate. We thought showered all our ideas. We pondered over what pictures would represent achievement, aspiration and success? The pupils unanimously picked a 'Space' theme and began to create pictures.
The best ideas were chosen for the mural. We started work straight away and set up a workshop in the school undergrounds. Have a look at our wonderful designs. We used specialist tools to cut up tiles to fit each mosaic. We stuck them to each board with glue. Kate then grouted each. We will be placing the mosaic onto the foyer wall this week. Keep checking back for the final photo!
